My Happy Marriage

Posted in Uncategorized on July 12th, 2009

As I look back over the many years (29)  that my husband and I have been together, I try to find one thing I believe to be the glue that has held us together.  We all know there is no “one” thing but I found what we both feel to be one of the most important…………. TIME

We made sure after work everyday we had the first thirty minutes to spend together.  We would find a spot where we could talk about the day, the bills, the kids, our love, our dreams, etc.  Those thirty minutes went by very fast but let us connect each and every day.  The morning was too early and very hurried.  The night was too late and we were too tired after supper, chores, homework, etc. so this time really worked for us.

Try finding a special time for yourselves to talk.  You can talk about anything.  It doesn’t really matter.  It helps you feel connected in an otherwise unconnected world.

What is your glue, share with us….

Secrets to a successful marriage

TIP 1 - Take a Premarital Education Class. Couples that do so experience a 30-percent increase in marital success versus those that don’t.

TIP 2 - Learn to Manage Conflict and Communicate Effectively. Share your true feelings with your future spouse and deal with problems when they arise instead of bottling them up. Seek outside resources, such as a marriage coach, relationship counselor or pastor, for help.

TIP 3 - Learn What Your Partner Expects From Marriage. Does your partner want children? Where do you want to live? Sometimes couples are so caught up in planning the wedding that they don’t have a chance to thoroughly address issues such issues. People assume they each share the same goal or vision for their marriage, you don’t find out unless  you talk with each other it.

TIP 4 - Be Committed to the Permanence of Marriage. It’s common for people to get married nowadays knowing they can get a divorce if things don’t work out. Taking it step by step and realizing that because it is a permanent thing, there’s no need to rush into it is important.

TIP 5 - Find a Mentor. Soon-to-be newlyweds need to find a couple that has had a long-lasting, successful marriage and find out what’s worked for them and what hasn’t. Your mentor couple can also serve as a valuable resource.

TIP 6 - Have Fun. There’s (hopefully) a good reason you’re marrying that special someone, so don’t forget to make time to spend together and enjoy each other’s company!
